Sparks the Rescue, currently playing some dates with Cartel before heading to Bamboozle, are set to release their latest album "Eyes to the Sun," on May 5th. Coming to Webster Theater in May, lead guitarist Toby McCallister took some time to chat with Harris about the coming months plans.
Toby: Hey! this is Toby from Sparks The Rescue. I play guitar and sing back up vocals for the band.
Harris: Can you talk about where the name of the band came from and how the group initially formed?
Toby: The name came from a cheesy romance novel by Nicholas Sparks called, The Rescue. We love romantic novels, so it's only fitting that we named our band after one. We have been playing together for about 5 years, and we all came together as a unit after playing in various different local bands back home.
Harris: Your new album comes out in a few weeks, I was hoping you could give us some insight on some of your favorite tracks. How did some of the songs come together and what are your favorite songs on the record?
Toby: I think my favorite songs are the new ones we recorded for the fearless records release. Pine Tree State and We Love Like Vampires are two of the most recent songs we've written, and I'm very pleased at the way they came out. I also really enjoy playing My Heart Radio and Skeleton live.
Harris: Who are your musical influences (bands that have influenced you)?
Toby: Some of my favorite bands include Saves The Day, The Gin Blossoms, Coconut Records, Jacks Mannequin and of course..Blink-182. We all grew up on Blink, so I feel compelled to mention them whenever discussing influences.
Harris: Do you have any non-musical influences?
Toby: I like to read books a lot! A few of us in the band are book nerds.
Harris: Where do you see yourself in the next 3 years?
Toby: In 3 years I hope to still be playing with these dudes and taking over the world one person at a time! But honestly, as long as I'm playing rock and roll jams with my friends, I will be happy. We just want to take this as far as we can.
Harris: Your myspace page is filled with twitter feeds. Do you find using social networking effective in your marketing campaign? How has this helped you connect with fans better?
Toby: I think the twitter craze is really outrageous, but along with everything else it's very helpful for bands to hang out (digitally) with their fans. In this age of myspace and blogging, kids want to know what you are doing! And I think it's fun to tweet. I won't lie.
Harris: What bands have you shared the stage with?
Toby: Well since we have been playing as this outfit for 5 years, the list of bands is pretty extensive, but to name a few: All Time Low, The Audition, Mayday Parade, Forever The Sickest Kids, Plain White T's, and a bunch more.
Harris: Do you have a wish-list of bands to play with in the future?
Toby: One day I would like to play with R Kelly.
Harris: What advice would you give other artists just starting in the industry now?
Toby: It's a tough world out there..especially in the music industry. but as long as you don't give up and follow your dreams, then things will happen!
